I use recycled yarns wherever possible, including recycled cotton, wool and t-shirt yarns. T-shirt yarns are made from the offcuts of the fashion industry, saving huge amounts of textiles from landfill. They have a lovely tactile quality due to the chunky nature of the yarn.
Recycled cotton and wool are collected into colour groups and respun without additional dye, reducing water waste and the need for new dye chemicals. The recycled yarns can have a slightly mottled tone, making the resulting products more unique.
Where recycled yarns are not possible I source yarns based upon their environmental impact. I use plant-based yarns from closed loop production, such as Hoooked Eucalyps made from sustainably planted eucalyptus trees.
If I make a product from Marino, due to thermal, itch-free and anti-bacterial properties, I ensure that the wool is sourced from a place which guarantees the sheep are well cared for and the practice of museling is not used. New wool can be an eco-friendly choice, as long as the whole process is considered.
