I am a contemporary crochet and knitwear designer / maker, based in Newton Abbot, Devon. I crochet, nalbind and knit, both with traditional needles and with a domestic manual knitting machine from the 80's - she's called Tiffany and is very temperamental!
I mostly take my inspiration from nature, especially the local landscapes: the myths of the moor to the former and current inhabitants of the nearby Jurassic Coast. I also like exploring how modern technology can be encorporated into knitting products - such as QR code cushions and the use of Near Field Communication (NFC) chips to make items interactive.
My aim is to make people smile, either by adding comfort to their lives or introducing an element of fun. I don't make things to be disposable, and am happy to repair things to give them a second lease of life. My items take time and care to make and, due to being handmade, they are all unique.
I am working towards using the most sustainable yarns available - this is not a simple task but I am especially enjoying using recycled yarns, spun from reclaimed and washed former clothes / bottles and crocheting baskets and footstools from the offcuts of the t-shirt industry. Sometimes I use acrylic, as it offers a vegan alternative and is suitable for skin which may be sensitive to wool. I am also investigating plant-based yarns which have a lovely softness and sheen to them, though these are currently difficult to source as they are made in mainland Europe.
As my products are made to order, I am happy to work with customers to meet their individual requirements. Nothing I make has scratchy labels inside.
I work in my attic studio with views to the Teign Estury, Haldon Hill and Dartmoor, or outside in my garden surrounded by wild garlic and happy bees.
